Vancouver Independent Music Centre Society (VIM), in association with the Powell Street Festival Society, is excited to announce DRUMMING UP SPIRIT on Sunday, May 12 at 2 PM at the Annex in Vancouver.

This event features two groups of multi-generational Indigenous and East Asian artists, drawn together by their passion and dedication to traditional music in contemporary times, a community focus, and the power of these shared experiences. Bringing Sawagi Taiko and Tzo’kam back together for one exhilarating performance, Drumming up Spirit isn’t one to miss.

Power, Passion, and Rhythm. Canada’s first all-women Taiko group. Founded in 1990, Sawagi Taiko is a multi-generational group of women of East Asian and Indigenous ancestry, brought together by our shared passion for the Japanese drum. With thunderous drum beats, stirring vocals, and martial-arts inspired choreography, we share the empowerment and exhilaration we feel through taiko with our diverse audiences. We harness the power of the drum to support feminist and social justice ideals. http://sawagitaiko.com

Tzo'kam, meaning "chickadee" and "visitors are coming" in the Stl'atl'imx language, brings to life the songs its founder, the late Flora Wallace learned as a child in Xaxlip (near Lillooet). The traditional songs have been kept alive by her son Russell Wallace along with members of his family and community. Tzo'kam wishes to share the teachings and traditions passed on by the elders with all communities.

This event is produced by the VIM with support from Canadian Heritage, JTC Heersink Family Foundation, Vancouver Civic Theatres and the Powell Street Festival Society. Feel the energy and spirit as the thunderous beats fill the air, captivating your senses. Don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind performance that will leave you inspired and uplifted. Mark your calendars and join us for Drumming Up Spirit featuring Sawagi Taiko and Tzo'kam!
